Extended trips and letting a place change you
So… I thought it would be appropriate to post this news on Canada Day, as I’ve been a bit reclusive lately. :) Iana and I decided to go on a year-long trip around Europe and the Middle East (and who knows where else). We’ll be based in Kyiv and I am very excited to work on music, dance, photo and video projects much closer to the source of our inspiration.
This was a somewhat sudden decision, but it came in perfect time on our professional journeys. One day I woke up early and immediately grabbed my phone (I know… dopamine junkies). I checked emails. Nope, no amazing requests for exotic photo shoots this time. Damn. I went on Instagram and scrolled my feed, filled with beautiful foreign lands in creative photos. Double damn. I should not be looking at my phone in the morning. I turned and saw Iana laying on her side. I thought she was sleeping. As I got closer, I saw she was actually awake, looking at… beautiful foreign lands in creative photos on her phone. Triple damn. What are we doing? Sometimes you have to see yourself from above and take the bold actions that are staring you in the face. It was time for a change. Instead of dreaming of travels for ‘when the time is right’, it was actually time to create the opportunities for that to happen.
I’ve been in Canada for almost 10 years, and I’m feeling the same enthusiasm I had when I moved here. Coming from Brazil to Canada, I had this idea that you must let the place change you, let your experiences there help shape who you want to become. A lot of the things I wanted to do actually happened in part because of this place, one that does allow you to explore and try things out. I became a photographer here. I became a drummer here. And now those two things want to take me somewhere else for a while. But the one thing I will certainly miss the most is the melting pot of cultures that exists in Toronto, unlike any other place in the planet that I know of. We’ll certainly be back, but it’s time to follow our curiosity to the places that call to us, and let them change us once again. Our adventures starts July 30, and I still have a lot of stuff to finish in Toronto before we go. That time constrain actually helps focus the mind and get a lot done.
Happy Canada Day!
