Back in the Arena
Today I submitted some of my fine art photos for a competition by SeeMe in New York and I’m very excited about the theme: “One Self”, about identity and self reflection. It came in good time, because it was exactly the subject of my first vlog, which I recorded yesterday and is coming out tomorrow.
Coincidently I saw today this quote from master of photography Ansel Adams: “You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.”
I think all art works are portals into an inner world that reflect our deepest longings, regrets and desires. I’ve been on a quest for reinvention, and part of the process of a personal renaissance is killing off your old self, the one that needs to die so something new can flourish.
I woke up with this image in my mind, one I created for The Orientalist series. On it, one character presents a dagger to an assassin. I wrote this in 2016 when I was coming up with ideas for the scene: “She began a personal renaissance, revolution in her eyes, rage and serenity turned into true focus.” Funny how certain images can be reminders of what your inner self most needs. I hope you find this little rant useful, and I’d be curious to know what kind of personal transformation you are going through, or avoiding :)
For me, it feels good being back in the arena, submitting my work and trying to find like-minded folks in search of ‘portals’.
Thanks to dancers Atmo Kranti and Tatiana K for portraying the idea so perfectly with their expression and costumes.
